2026      Ebola  Bundibugyo epidemic

On 15 May 2026, Africa CDC reported an outbreak of Ebola virus disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), primarily affecting Ituri Province, with suspected expansion into neighboring North Kivu Province. International spread was also documented, with two laboratory-confirmed cases identified in Kampala, Uganda, following travel from the DRC. WHO declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 17 May 2026.

In this context, our lab developed a series of rapid analyses and reports to support epidemic risk assessment and preparedness, which are presented on this page.

The work was supported by: EU Horizon Europe grant ESCAPE; ANRS | Maladies infectieuses émergentes grant PReViX and ESCAPE; Working Group on Pandemic Preparedness of the French Research Action on Modeling Epidemics (FRAME), funded by ANRS | Maladies infectieuses émergentes.
