Short bio After completing a master's degree in applied mathematics and statistics at the Swiss Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL - Switzerland) in 2016, Anthony started a PhD at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM), part of the University of Bern (Switzerland). During his PhD, which he completed in February 2021, Anthony built mathematical models to reproduce and predict the spread of HIV drug resistances in South Africa. Following his PhD, Anthony worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Zurich, ISPM in Bern, and the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) in Bern (all in Switzerland). In March 2023, he joined the EPIcx team to model and characterize the variation in social contacts during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
Research activities
Anthony is motivated to develop state-of-the-art mathematical models to understand the dynamics of various epidemics. During the COVID-19 crisis, he worked on several projects aimed at assessing its burden at the initial stages of the pandemic. For instance, he provided estimates of mortality by age in several countries in Europe. His work at EPIcx involves developing a parametric model that replicates the contact patterns observed in Europe during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work is valuable for pandemic preparedness, as it will help support a rapid response to potential outbreaks.
